Welcome to Chapter 8 in the What The Hell Chronicles. This 1 is absolutely appalling to me.
Last Tuesday, Yosio Lopez (7), who has special needs, suffers from ADHD, as well as another mood disorder was handcuffed, tased, and bruised by Dallas Independent School District Police after he had an episode and began banging his head against the wall in his classroom. According to his family, he's previously experienced similar episodes, but regularly he has a trained school aide to work with him and calm him down. On this day, Yosio didn't have an aide by his side to help him through the episode. According to the Lopez family lawyer, David Ramirez, Yosio told his mother, April Odis, that he was put on a desk with his arms cuffed behind his back while the school principal put her elbow on his neck and choked him to restrain him. After being restrained, Yosio was taken to a mental health facility without his mother's permission and without being notified, he was committed for a week, he was heavily sedated during the time he spent @ Dallas Behavioral Hospital, he wasn't allowed to see his mother for the 1st 2 days because he was deemed "a danger to himself and those around him." He was released Monday night. In response to the claims that district police used extreme force, this statement was released by the school district, "The Dallas Independent School District is committed to educating the whole child each day, and in doing so, we believe in providing a productive learning environment that is safe for all staff and students. While there has been media interest into an alleged incident at one of our Dallas Independent School District campuses, due to federal confidentiality laws protecting the privacy of all students and their families, we are unable to publicly confirm or deny the matter reported." Brief thoughts: this is beyond disgusting to me. He's a child with special needs, yet he's been restrained like he's a grown ass man! If it's been known that he has this episodes, why in the hell wasn't he provided with a backup or temporary aide until his normal aide returned?? You all knew this was a possibility with this child, yet you all just left him to handle it by himself. I believe wholeheartedly that this family is doing this right thing by lawyering up and I hope they go after this school and this principal for everything they're worth! The trauma that this child has experienced for something more than likely he can't control is unimaginable! AND THEN, you take him to a facility without his mother by his side or without seeking her permission? Who the hell do you people think you are?? Don't take my child anywhere without my permission because he's my child! You don't get to make those decisions without asking and notifying me! AND THEN, he wasn't allowed to see his mother for days! Even though he was heavily sedated, I'm sure he was terrified, and wanted nothing more than to be with his mother. Shame on this school district, shame on this principal, and shame on these officers that restrained him as if he wasn't a child!
