In the wake of the tragic murder of Karen Smith, I just wanted to share some statistics and facts with everybody out there that might be in domestic situations. I just wanted to put these things in your mind to make you think.
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PORTION OF THESE FACTS!
A big problem that has been detected over the years is that when it's time to go to court, it's the abuser that is offered help, not the victim. Some cities and towns even punish victims who call authorities more than a certain # of times aka Nuisance Citations. Personal moment time! I've been in a domestic violence situation with a very scary individual who would tell me that he would make me disappear, people would find me floating in the river, etc. Being in that situation where you're terrified of the person that you're with is HELL and it's scary to think about leaving. When I wanted to leave and be done wit him is when ish started getting worse. His threats intensified, he made up lies saying he had cancer to try and get me to stay, he would pop up wherever I was, etc. I know that he owns guns and it's terrifying to think that what happened to Smith could've happened to me or anybody else in these situations. Just like Smith, in the beginning my ex seemed normal, he was lovely, had a lovely personality, we clicked, and had incredible chemistry, but just like with Smith something changed and I wanted to leave. Just because he was lovely in the beginning, if you feel like things are changing, please don't ignore those red flags, get out immediately! I just wanted to share the above facts and statistics, so that women who are in these situations know they're not alone and be aware of the risks/consequences that could come their way if they don't get out! I also wanted to share these facts about when a person is prohibited to own guns because I think it's SO important for women and men to do their homework before they decide to get heavily involved with another person.
