If you're a public official and you don't let people know things that could potentially kill them, you're a murderer, and the death of these people are forever on your hands.
Corinne Miller was Michigan's Director of Disease Control and said in her plea deal that she was more than aware of Legionnaire's disease in the Flint, Michigan area when the city started using a different water source. For those that don't know, Legionnaire's disease is a type of pneumonia caused by bacteria that thrives in warm water and infects the lungs. Also for those that don't know, a little background info about the Flint water crisis, Flint was drawing water from the Flint River, but not treating it to reduce corrosion. Lead then seeped from old pipes and fixtures, causing the water system to become contaminated. There were nearly 100 cases of Legionnaire's disease in the Flint area and there were 12 deaths between 2014 and 2015. Corinne Miller was placed on probation for a year, ordered to perform 300 hrs of community service, and ordered to write an apology to residents. So, pretty much she's getting off scott free even though she had the knowledge that this was occurring and chose to not say a word. Who know if she had said something earlier if measures could've been put in place to have people avoid this water sooner, so they wouldn't have gotten sick, and died. You ma'am have these people's deaths on your hands for the rest of your life and I personally don't think probation is enough. You should be in jail for @ least 12 years since that's how many people died due to you not opening your mouth and doing your job. I agree with the community service, give back to the community that you were aware was going to get sick and die. As far as this letter, yeah she should have to apologize, but if you don't genuinely mean the things you're going to put in this letter, skip it cause that's not going to bring these people that died back.

The rent is too damn high and in Flint's case, so are the water bills. Starting today residents in Flint, Michigan will go back to paying the full amounts of their water bills. The state is ending a program that either reduced or stopped the bills of some of its residents.
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past almost 3 years, here's a brief recap of what's been going on in Flint courtesy of ABC News: Flint authorized a new pipeline in 2013 that was intended to reduce costs by switching the city’s water supply, but the execution was flawed, leading to fecal and, eventually, lead contamination of the city’s water. A CDC study published in July found that after the water switch was made, children younger than 6 were 46 percent more likely to have elevated lead levels in their blood than before. A spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Snyder claims that tests done in the past 3 months meet federal standards, however doctors and community activists have no faith in these tests and believe that the water is still unsafe. (Can anybody really blame them for feeling this way?) Also, this spokeswoman has said that, although the water has been deemed safe, state officials are still urging Flint residents to filter their water, and the state will continue to provide filters free of charge to residents. Gee...thanks, that's the least you all can do. Lemme get this straight, so these people haven't had safe water for almost 3 years, but all of a sudden out the clear blue sky the water has been deemed safe to use again. It's a miracle! And just in the nick of time for the state to stop assisting residents with their water bills, which are some of the highest in the nation by the way. These people are supposed to trust a gov't/officials that let them down, ignored them, And lied to them AND 3 months of testing after being given the run around for almost 3 years? I think not. 3 years of testing needs to be done on this water before these residents have to start paying for water bills and something needs to be put in place to reduce the cost of their bills permanently. The gov't wants these people to pay an arm and a leg for water they can't trust is safe? In what world does that happen in? Oh yeah, in America...if only we could take some of that $$ we're saving to build this stupid Mexico wall and put it to better use and help the people in our own backyard. |
